A STEPHEN Wilson wondergoal helped Auchinleck Talbot see off Fraserburgh and set up a dream Scottish Cup tie against Ayr United.
The Bot kept their first away clean sheet in the Scottish Cup proper as they won 1-0 at Bellslea Park to reach the fourth round for the second time.
Talbot will take on the Honest Men at Beechwood Park on January 19.
Manager Tommy Sloan played for Ayr between 1983 and 1986 but he isn’t getting carried away with the prospect of playing his former team.
He told the Chronicle: “It’s a long way away yet, it’s not until January 19.
“It’s a tasty cup tie, when did you ever think we’d play Ayr United in the Scottish Cup?
“Ayr are a quality side at the moment, they are top of the Championship so we could’ve picked a better time to come up against them.
“As I’ve said, It’s quite a while away yet. We’ve got the Junior Cup first and then we’ll get in about the league fixtures.”
Talbot have now seen off the top two in the Highland League after beating leaders Cove Rangers in the previous round.
They have also preserved their unbeaten record against Highland opposition – taking their tally to seven wins from seven cup ties.
And boss Sloan was pleased with his players on Saturday.
He added: “I think we played well, it was quite a tight affair.
“We created four or five half chances and Stephen’s scored a great goal from 25 yards.
“On the balance of play, I think we deserved to go through. Our performance was decent and we’ll take that form into the Blantyre game this weekend.”
Sloan’s side have played six matches in the Scottish Cup this season – scoring 19 goals in the process.
That coupled with their Sectional League Cup success and matches in the Junior and West of Scotland Cups mean Talbot will be eight matches behind in the league by the time they play their next match on December 8.
In the meantime, Sloan’s side continue their defence of the Junior Cup with a fourth round tie away to Blantyre Victoria.
The Bot are unbeaten in their last seven matches and have recorded 19 wins from 24 games so far this season.
However, Sloan isn’t taking League One side Blantyre lightly.
Sloan said: “We’re going to a tough place. From what I’m hearing, the park is quite heavy so I just hope it goes ahead.
“We’ll be expected to win especially after the highs of last week.”
