Scottish spot named one of the best market towns in the UK

Wigtown, an idyllic spot in Dumfries and Galloway, was named alongside other places across the UK, including Horncastle in Lincolnshire and Malmesbury in Wiltshire.

Introducing the list, The Telegraph said these villages offer "quiet and escape" from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Scottish spot named one of the best market towns to visit

Wigtown in Dumfries and Galloway was named one of the best market towns in the UK by The Telegraph.

The Scottish location was said to be a book lover's "heaven" because of its high street which is "jam-packed with stores selling books old and new."

Dubbed Scotland's "book town," the spot was once the capital of Galloway before settling into its role as a quiet "bibliophile’s heaven."

Recommending stores to visit, the publication highlighted Byre Books for mythology and folklore, Faodail for Scottish antiquities and ReadingLasses for some cake.

The location is also well known for the Wigtown Book Festival which takes over every autumn.

An Institute of Place Management report recently said that book  shops significantly contribute to the "vitality and viability" of a high street, offering a central location for events and gatherings.
