ROADS bosses have said that a proposed new petrol station in Mauchline should be passed if specific conditions are met.

Proposals have been submitted to East Ayrshire Council to build a new garage on vacant land on Kilmarnock Road, which was previously served by a petrol garage.

Transport Scotland had previously said that plans had to be updated to include more feasible entry and exit points for delivery lorries, which was listened to by planners.

Overall, the potential development has been met with a largely negative response by locals, with many commenting that it would increase traffic issues in the area.

Despite these concerns, the proposals have also been met with some more upbeat feedback, with some saying that an added business can only be a good thing for Mauchline.

Now, Transport Scotland has provided further feedback to the plans, saying that conditions such as improved pedestrian crossing work must be carried out before any approval is granted by the local authority.

A document attached to the plans from Transport Scotland says: "Prior to the development becoming operational, the existing access/egress and the proposed pedestrian crossing on the A76 trunk road shall be upgraded/provided.

"The applicant should be informed that the granting of planning consent does not carry with it the right to carry out works within the trunk road boundary and that permission must be granted by Transport Scotland Roads Directorate.

"The road works which are required due to the above conditions will require a road safety audit as specified by the design manual for roads and bridges."

The number of objections mean it's possible, though not yet confirmed, that the application could be decided by councillors on the local authority's planning committee, rather than by officials.

An initial outcome for the plans had been unofficially set for June. However, resubmission of plans mean that this has been pushed back.
