IT is a privilege to write for the Cumnock Chronicle. In the coming weeks and months, I will use this column to keep you informed of my activities in parliament and the constituency.
It was the greatest honour for me to have been elected to parliament to represent the people of Kilmarnock and Loudoun constituency (which contains part of Cumnock), I have lived in the constituency for 20 years.
I worked in the NHS and that coupled with 12 years as a local councillor has made me a proud public servant with a combined 34 years of public service. I know that my life and work experiences will serve me well in the role of member for Kilmarnock and Loudoun, and I promise to serve you to the very best of my abilities.
A New Deal for Workers
The last Labour government lifted basic minimum rights in the workplace by introducing the National Minimum Wage, the 48-hour working week, 28-days paid holiday, and greater protection.
We recently published a new Employment Bill that will introduce new workplace rights to end unfair employment practices and help deliver economic growth.
Our Bill will ban exploitative zero-hours contracts, end fire and rehire, and introduce basic employment rights from day one. This is the biggest upgrade to workers’ rights in a generation, and a significant step towards delivering this government’s plan to make work pay.
The Bill will establish rights to bereavement and paternity and parental leave from day one and strengthen statutory sick pay.
Our new laws will end exploitative zero hours contracts and unscrupulous fire and rehire practices.
Politics can often be a confusing and noisy place, but this bill shows how a Labour government can make real changes to people’s lives.
Today I will be supporting the Employment Rights Bill - a vital step in delivering the #NewDeal for working people. #MakeWorkPay
