A CUMNOCK councillor has lauded the work of the town's NEST Wellbeing Group and the efforts of the woman who is behind the group’s success.
Natalie Carmichael was recently nominated by Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley MSP, Elena Whitham, as her ‘local hero’ as part of the celebrations marking 25 years of the Scottish Parliament.
The group provides a much needed safe and welcoming space for people of all backgrounds and is based on the premise that ‘everyone is recovering from something’.

During a discussion on community learning and development at East Ayrshire Council cabinet, Cumnock and New Cumnock councillor and depute leader, Jim McMahon, praised the work of the group and Natalie in particular.
He said: “I’d really like to pay tribute to Natalie Carmichael from The Nest who was recently chosen to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament as the local MSP’s local hero.
“She does some fantastic and amazing work at the Nest and really goes beyond to try and break through the stigma that exists within communities.”

He spoke about the weekly breakfast club held at Barrhill Community Centre in Cumnock on Wednesday mornings.
He said: “It’s a fantastic room where you can get 30 to 50 people from all walks of life in the community in there.
“It’s a great place so in recognition I would just like to show my appreciation for what the team is doing there.”
Natalie has been at the heart of her community for years, supporting them as an NHS volunteer, something that came to the fore during the pandemic.
Her tireless volunteering includes distribute clothing, food, and other household items to those in need in Cumnock and the surrounding areas.
