PEOPLE from across the political spectrum and civic life were shocked and saddened to hear about the death of former First Minister Alex Salmond.

Regardless of your views, most would agree that he was a giant of Scottish politics who loved his country and always fought for what he believed was best for it.

His place will be firmly cemented in the history books. My thoughts are with Alex’s family and friends during this difficult time.

I recently attended a poignant service in Girvan which unveiled a memorial for the 31 lost souls of the French merchant Navy ship the SS Longwy which was torpedoed on in 1917 by a German U-boat near Stranraer.

Ten years ago, Ritchie and Lorna Conaghan of the Girvan and District Great War Project embarked upon their indefatigable mission to erect a memorial for their ultimate sacrifice for our peace. I thank them for their efforts and would encourage everyone to pay a visit to the memorial if they can.

In other local news, I want to extend my congratulations to The Way Forward 2045 in Cumnock, and We Hae Meat in Girvan for being nominated as finalists in the upcoming VIBES Scottish Environment Business Awards.

My fingers are crossed for the ceremony later this year!

Finally, firework season is now upon us.

For many this is a fun and enjoyable time, but for some, such as the elderly, veterans, and our pets, it can be quite distressing.

Scotland is leading the way with legislation to protect these groups and your local council now has the power to implement restricted control zones.

Please consider attending an organised public display this year. These are safer and allow people to prepare for the times when fireworks are scheduled.
