THE location for the permanent banking hub in Cumnock has been confirmed.

The town was chosen for the facility following on from the closure of all the bank branches in Cumnock and surrounding areas.

A banking hub is a shared banking space, offering a counter service operated by the Post Office, where customers of all major banks and building societies can carry out regular cash transactions, Monday to Friday.

A temporary banking hub has been set up within Cumnock library, to provide services to people in the community.

It was rumoured that the hub would take up permanent residence in the former TSB bank building on Townhead Street.

However, Cash Access UK, the organisation set up to protect nationwide access to cash, has now confirmed that the new hub in Cumnock will be located at 2 Glaisnock Street.

A community banker service will be provided at the location, which will allow customers to speak about more complicated issues relating to their bank.

Specialist advisors for different banks will be at the hub on different days, although all banks can be serviced there.

They are:

  • Monday: Virgin Money
  • Tuesday: Bank of Scotland
  • Wednesday: TSB
  • Thursday: RBS
  • Friday: Santander

Cumnock's final bank branch closed in June, when the Bank of Scotland on Townhead Street closed its doors for good.

The Lloyds Banking Group announced last year that it planned to close the Bank of Scotland branch on Townhead Street.

Lloyds came in for heavy criticism after saying the decision was taken because the number of customers at the branch is falling, with members of the public claiming the group was deliberately discouraging people from banking in person.

Speaking about the opening, Gareth Oakley, CEO at Cash Access UK, said: “It’s great news that we have secured a location for the permanent banking hub in Cumnock.

"It’s a big step forward and we’ll keep the community updated as it progresses.”
