Stair Bridge is set to remain closed following the completion of investigation works.
The bridge, between Mauchline and Drongan, has been closed for over two weeks following damage caused by a vehicle.
Ayrshire Roads Alliance (ARA), which maintains roads in the area on behalf of East and South Ayrshire Council, said that it would remain closed until work is carried out.
An update from the roads company has said that repair work is now being carried out, and the bridge closure will remain in place until at least the beginning of November.
ARA said: "Investigation works on the extent of the repair works required for Stair Bridge, a category A listed structure, have been carried out and are now complete.
"Repair works which will be carried out using specially ordered sandstone are scheduled to be carried out between 16 September and 1 November.
"During this time the bridge will remain closed."
Diversions are in place via the B730 towards Coalhall, then onto the A70 and A77 for Ayr, and then through the B743 and B730 and vice versa.
A diversion for high-sided vehicles is via B730, A70, U728 towards Drongan and Sinclairston, then via the B7046, B730 and A70.
