Youngsters from Ayrshire have taken part in the latest instalment of a water safety course at Loch Doon.

To ensure children and young people understand the dangers of open water, East Ayrshire Council’s health and safety section joined forces with Scottish Fire and Rescue, the RNLI, Police Scotland, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Loch Doon Rangers and the Scottish Ambulance Service to create an innovative water safety awareness course.

The course began in 2022, with pupils from local schools taking part in the training every year.

Youngsters received essential lifesaving skills training including CPR awareness and defib training and will be taught how to float in the water, should they find themselves in danger.

They also learned valuable information about cold-water shock, which is one of the main causes of drowning in Scotland.

Four days of training have taken place this year, sharing the valuable lessons with a range of youngsters.

Doon Valley Councillor, Drew Filson said: Another successful event at Loch Doon delivering our water safety training, organiser by East Ayrshire Council Health and Safety team and out multi-agency colleagues.

"One hundred pupils from Doon Academy, Stewarton Academy and Nether Robertland Primary in Stewarton learned these most important life skills.

"A huge thanks also to Brian Meechan for opening up the Roundhouse Café for everyone.

"Well done to all who have attended the training days, pupils and colleagues."
