This week, we look back to the Chronicle's top stories from early June 2014.

And there was plenty going on in the area, from Mauchline Holy Fair, to preparations for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and even a local star in the finals of Britain's Got Talent.

Cumnock Chronicle: Games

Doon Academy pupil Paige McMahon was set to perform in the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Paige, 17, would join Catherine Bacon from Grange Academy as East Ayrshire’s representatives at the big event in Glasgow.


Cumnock Chronicle: Talent

Cumnock’s Britain’s Got Talent entrant Elaine Withers, who appeared alongside Peat Loaf, won an army of fans despite bowing out of the hit show in early June 2014.


Cumnock Chronicle: Bank

Jennifer Bolton, manager of the Townhead Street branch of the Bank of Scotland in Cumnock, handed over a cheque for £1,770 to the Four Connections Youth Group in 2014. Staff at the bank climbed Ayrshire’s highest hill, Blackcraig, to raise the cash.


Cumnock Chronicle: Race

The Burns clan from Cumnock did their bit for charity as they walked, ran and danced their way to the finishing line at the 2014 Race For Life, held in Irvine’s Eglinton Park.


Cumnock Chronicle: Cathy

MP Cathy Jamieson joined Primary 6 and 7 pupils at Mauchline Primary for a school Question Time in June 2014. The pupils quizzed the MP on her role in Parliament and the constituency, as well as her interests outside of politics.


Cumnock Chronicle: The 2014 Mauchline Holy Fair saw locals urged to sing the pledge against the 'demon drink'

The 2014 Mauchline Holy Fair was a roaring success, with many donning costumes for the big day. David Steele and PC William Worn, pictured, even agreed to sign the pledge to avoid the demon drink, at the insistence of Audrey Webster and Aileen Ross.
