The area's MSP has called for "further improvements" to the A76 after two men died in separate horror road crashes on the same night this week.

Both men died at the scene of the incidents on the A76 just hours apart on Monday, May 20.

A 34-year-old motorcyclist died following a crash between Mauchline and Kilmarnock at around 7pm.

A few hours later, at around 10.15pm, a 43-year-old man died at the scene of a one-car crash between Mauchline and Auchinleck.

Police have said enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of both incidents.

Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley MSP, Elena Whitham said she was "deeply saddened" to hear of the two deaths, as she said she would continue her pursuit of improvements on this road.

Ms Whitham penned a letter to Amey and Transport Scotland, alongside Ballochmyle councillor, William Lennox at the end of last year, safety measures to be introduced at the B713/A76 junction near Catrine.

This is close to where one of Monday night's tragedies took place, although there was nothing to suggest the junction was connected with this incident.

The SNP representative said she will continue her fight for road upgrades.

She said: “I am deeply saddened to learn that two people have lost their lives on the A76 last night.

"I send my heartfelt condolences to their loved ones at this extremely difficult time.

“I trust a full investigation will be underway by the appropriate authorities to establish the causes of these tragic incidents.

"However, our community will know there have been numerous accidents on this road in the past and I will continue to call for further improvements."
