A public meeting will be held next week giving people the chance to have their say on plans to build another energy storage facility near Drongan.

Applicants Intelligent Land Investment Group (ILI Group), wants to create the facility along the A70 near to Coalhall.

East Ayrshire Council recently granted permission for a similar proposal by Balance Power Projects Ltd for up to 18 battery containers, a substation and electrical equipment on a site between Ochiltree and Drongan.

ILI Group's proposals would enable around 100MW of power to be stored and exported from the site to the electricity grid, according to the submission.

A public drop-in event is to be held at Drongan Community Centre on Tuesday, May 14 from 3-7pm.

The ILI Group says feedback from the event will form part of an official planning application for the project.

Because the generating capacity of the proposed operation is more than 50 megawatts, the power to grant permission lies with the Scottish Government, not with the council.

An ILI Group spokesperson said: "Scotland has a Target of Net Zero by 2045.

"Renewable energy is intermittent. This means we can’t rely on it to meet demand.

"Fossil fuel generators, coal, gas and nuclear make up the difference.

"As these go off line we need to be able to meet that demand."
