Pupils and staff from The Robert Burns Academy are once again putting their best foot forward in aid of a local charity.

Organised once again by school supply teacher Bernard Shepherd, a team of almost 40 will tackle the Roon the Toon 10k run in Kilmarnock on June 9.

It's not the first time a team from the school has raised money for charity, with a group also taking part in the run last year in support of the Yipworld youth project in Cumnock.

Pupils and staff have also tackled The Great Scottish Run to raise funds for Alzheimer Scotland.

Mr Shepherd has taken on many fund-raising events throughout his teaching career, all for a range of different charities, which has led to his pupils catching the bug and taking on similar challenges.

His first venture into a running event came back in 2011, when his 30-year-old son took his own life, leading to an event being held in his honour for Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH) and Mind.

This year, the Cumnock runners will be raising cash for Ayrshire Cancer Support, and they're looking for support from the public.

A school representative said: "We are hoping to raise funds for Ayrshire Cancer Support a charity which helps in many different ways all who are affected by cancer, individuals, family, children and friends.

"Just one of the fantastic ways they support is by transporting patients for treatment to various hospitals in the west of Scotland, for example the Beatson Clinic in Glasgow.

"Please click donate whatever you can it will be much appreciated by the charity and all those giving of there time to raise funds for this extremely worthy cause."
