COUNCIL officers have reached a decision on the fate of a former school building in Cumnock.
Officials from East Ayrshire Council (EAC) have decided to demolish the former Greenmill Primary building on Barrhill Road.
The building, which was last used as a temporary home for Netherthird Primary, has lain empty and increasingly derelict since the new Netherthird facility in Craigens Road was opened in February last year.
However, it could be a year until the demolition and clearance work at the site is completed.
EAC had put the building up for sale last year, but said that no interested parties came forward.
A cabinet meeting in April 2023 heard that the building could be demolished, if a buyer wasn't found for the property.
Now it has been revealed that the building will indeed be razed to the ground.
A Cabinet report for February 14 said "there is a £1m allocated in the Capital Programme to facilities the demolition costs of Auchinleck Academy and Greenmill primary school."
Cumnock and New Cumnock SNP councillor Jim McMahon had previously said he hoped that the building was not on the market for too long, for fear of vandals targeting the property.
Demolition is due to be completed by the start of next year, at which point the vacant ground will then be listed for sale.

An East Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: "At its meeting of April 19, 2023 the cabinet took the decision to advertise the former Greenmill Primary School building for sale on the open market, and in the event that a buyer couldn’t be found, arrangements were to be made to demolish the building.
"In April 2023 the building was advertised for sale, but no offers have been received and as a consequence preparations are now being made to demolish the building.
"It is anticipated demolition work will be completed in early 2025.
"Once demolition is complete, the cleared site will be offered for sale."
