A review is underway on a section of road known for being a "accident blackspot", according to local representatives.

Carrick, Cumnock, and Doon Valley MSP, Elena Whitham and Councillor William Lennox, who represents Ballochmyle ward, are working on improved safety measures to be introduced at the B713/A76 junction near Catrine.

The SNP politicians have written to Amey and Transport Scotland following several collisions on the busy stretch of road.

In November alone, we have reported on four people being taken to hospital and a separate incident of a woman being issued a fixed penalty notice following a crash at the junction.

Ms Whitham and Mr Lennox have acknowledged improvements to the signage at the junction but say more still needs to be done.

Councillor Lennox has been informed by the South West trunk roads operator, Amey, that a review is underway at the junction.

He said: “The Catrine road-end junction on the A76 Trunk Road is a notorious local accident blackspot.

“There have been a significant number of Road Traffic Accidents at this location over the years and although the signage etc., has been improved, these incidents persist, and are now happening almost on a weekly basis.

“Several constituents have been in touch recently to see if anything more can be done to improve safety at this location, so I took this up with AMEY SW Trunk Roads who responded to say that they are aware of the issues, and that their road safety team are currently carrying out a conflict study at the junction, along with reviewing the full layout.”

Supporting this, Ms Whitham added: “Many people in our community will know that the B713/A76 junction has been the site of far too many accidents. My thoughts are with those who have been affected.

“It is most welcome that improvements have been made to the signage at the junction, but we owe it to road users to see if more can be done.

“I have taken the step of writing to Transport Scotland to call for this to be addressed and any additional safety measures that are feasible to be implemented.

"This request is currently under review by the Road Safety Manager.”
