The fruits - and vegetables, and flowers - of a year's hard work in the gardens and greenhouses of Mauchline went on display recently at the Mauchline Horticultural and Agricultural Society's 80th annual show.
Former Ayr MSP John Scott came along to present the trophies to the winners at the Parish Church halls - though there was plenty to see for all who came along in addition to watching the presentation of prizes.
Irene Yuill, the secretary of the society, told the Chronicle: "Eighty adults and 30 children produced a total of 639 exhibits, 128 of these in the children’s classes.
"This was a considerable rise on last year. We were joined by several new exhibitors who helped to fill the show benches.
"Although the overall number of entries in some flower sections were down, the number of vegetable exhibits were up overall.
"Considering the changeable weather in the lead up to the show we were pleasantly surprised by the number and quality of exhibits produced by the gardeners.
"This being the 80th Show I think everyone put in the extra effort to bring along their exhibits.
"The Floral Art section saw the biggest rise in numbers with 40 exhibits over the nine classes, a welcome change from the three exhibits last year.
"We hope that everyone who came along for the first time will again support us next year and we can continue to keep the show going and the number of exhibitors and exhibits increasing.
"If you have never shown before please give it a try - there is always someone willing to help and encourage. Look around your own garden now and see what you have that you could have entered and do it next year.
"It is not only the winners that make the show - it is everyone who enters, and you never know, you might just beat someone who has been showing for years.
"The Society wishes to thank the exhibitors, visitors, committee and volunteers for their help and support to make this such a successful event. Without the work of those who gave up their time to help before the doors opened and to clear up afterwards we could not run the show."
