The new Heritage Centre Cumnock has been honoured at the recent Best of Scotland awards.

The centre was a runner-up in the Best Visitor Attraction/Experience category for 2023, voted for by readers of our sister paper The Herald.

Founder and Lead Trustee of the centre, Jim Smith said: “It’s fantastic to receive this recognition, which is a testament to all the hard work carried out by our team of volunteers over the years.

“Above all, it shows that those who have visited have enjoyed the experience and we hope this recognition will lead to more visitors through our doors.”

Since its inception in 2020, the Heritage Centre, located at Block 7 in the town’s Caponacre Industrial Estate, has evolved and expanded and is now home to a collection of more than 1,000 exhibits.

Among this treasure trove of memorabilia are rare steam engines, cars, trucks, emergency vehicles, industrial machinery and agricultural implements as well as many smaller displays and individual collections serving as a reminder of days gone by in Ayrshire, Scotland and beyond.

Also amidst the museum’s many highlights is a special display of Police heritage while The Fire Station shows off some equipment used and uniforms worn by firefighters through the decades.

And the Heritage Centre – which has charitable status and relies on volunteers and donations – isn’t resting on its laurels.
