The work of a constituency MSP is wide and far reaching, and it is a huge privilege to serve the good folks right across the beautiful Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley constituency.
On Mondays and Fridays I generally get to spend time in the constituency, and have been enjoying doing joint advice surgeries with my councillor colleagues right across the patch, which have been enjoyable and successful – both for engaging with constituents and catching up with councillor colleagues on the work we are taking forward separately and collectively at all spheres of Government.
I also enjoy visiting and supporting as many constituency groups and organisations as possible, and if there are any groups or organisations who would like to let me know what they are doing or in need of assistance I would encourage them to be in touch.
Just this week, I visited Catrine and got to spend time with some local businesses including the wonderful Twighlight Candle Co, enjoyed a lovely lunch at the Cotton Trail and then on to talk to members of Catrine Community Trust to take forward some enquiries on their behalf.
I also recently visited the Girvan Youth Trust, to hear about the huge variety of supports and opportunities for young people on offer right in the heart of the community, and the amazing recovery hub with Auchinleck Community Development Initiative (ACDI) to hear more about all of the supports available at the heart of the community for those in recovery.
A day in the life of a MSP is varied, no two days are the same and there is never any free or idle time. Add to that my ministerial responsibilities and at times we are just catching breath and moving on – but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
It is honestly the privilege of my life to serve each and every one of you, and know how very lucky we are to have so many grass root organisations providing needed supports.
I would of course not be able to do half of what I do if it was not for my very small and dedicated constituency staff team who ensure my constituents are supported whilst I am in parliament or delivering my responsibilities as the minister for drugs and alcohol Policy.
My MSP office can assist with all mater of supports for areas under devolved responsibility, and if we cannot assist we will signpost you to the best place that can, so if you have an issue for which you need advice or assistance please get in touch and we will see how best you can be supported.
