AN AMATEUR football club in Mauchline is drawing up plans to celebrate the 150th anniversary of football in the village - and has shared some fascinating old pictures of teams from the past in a bid to drum up interest.
Players and officials of Mauchline United AFC are planning to host a celebration event at the Mauchline Kilmarnock Supporters Club on Saturday, July 1.
Organised football in Mauchline can trace its roots all the way back to 1873 and the founding of the original Mauchline FC.
Playing at Connel Park in the village, the original club played in the Scottish Cup from 1875 until 1886, hosting many giants of the game, including Queen’s Park, Rangers, Hibernian and Renton.
Mauchline FC also helped to buy the original Ayrshire Cup, which they went on to win in 1877-78, beating Kilmarnock Portland 4-2 in the final.
The club is now inviting all former players from any of the teams that played in the village through the years to come along and enjoy a night of stories, photos and great company at the July event.
Tickets will be available in the coming week from the club and its committee members.
To find out more information or buy your tickets, contact the club via the ‘Mauchline United AFC’ page on Facebook (where the pictures above of bygone teams were originally posted), @AFCMauchline on Twitter, or by email at mauchlineunitedafc@gmail.com.
