A flood alert has been issued for Ayrshire and Arran today - and is expected to last until Saturday.

As more rain moves in, SEPA updated their flood alert for the area, saying that "periods of heavy and often persistent rain... is expected to cause localised flooding from rivers and small watercourses, particularly of low lying land and roads."

Surface water poses a risk, with experts expecting it to "cause disruption to local travel, particularly in known trouble spots."

There could be difficult driving conditions and longer journey times and there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly.

The Met Office has also issued a yellow weather warning for North Ayrshire, including Ardrossan and Irvine, with the same caution being advised for those travelling by train or bus.

In East Ayrshire, the council say their flood scouts have been briefed and standby crews are ready to take action.

If residents are affected by flooding and require assistance, they should call 0345 724 0000.
