Rockers, fundraisers and party people are gearing up for the return of a popular music and charity event in Mauchline next month, which intends to raise thousands of pounds for deserving NHS staff.
On the go since 2016, TomFest 2021 is an annual fundraising event which has, to date, taken in an incredible £13,000 for various causes such as Alzheimer Scotland and Parkinsons UK.
This year, however, those behind the day of music, which will feature seven of the most popular bands in Ayrshire and the central belt, has partnered with the Ayrshire and Arran health board to raise £3,000 for their staff well-being service which is located in hospitals including Girvan, Ayr and Kilmarnock.
Event organiser, Tom Murray, explained: “Way back in 2016, a group of colleagues and I decided to fundraise for Foundation Scotland. People were fed up of us asking them for money and it was hard work to get the funds raised so I took inspiration from an Ayrshire event that doesn’t exist anymore called Bella’s Bawl. I thought, if they can do it, why can’t I?
“I held my first event in Prestwick then moved to Mauchline because it sold out within two weeks and it held more seats. It sells out every year now.
“I’ve not got any charities close to my heart so if someone approaches me with one, I’ll do it for that, but nurses were at the front of everyone’s mind this year. I was approached by a nurse to do it for the wellbeing unit.
“One of the stipulations I have is the money stays within Ayrshire. Even though we raise money for national charities, I’m always guaranteed that the money goes to Ayrshire branches.”
The wellbeing team provide mental health support and address emotional, practical and physical wellbeing interventions at various levels, from a listening service to a clinical psychology input.
A safe wellbeing area is also available for staff to have a cuppa, share experiences and relax away from their clinical areas.
Tom added: “I stay loyal to three bands who play on the day, one of them being Wildcard who are from Mauchline, Catrine, Cumnock and Ayr. This year, the RAD Group and Buzzworks donated prizes as did the Dumfries Arms and the Loch Lomond Group.”
