A NEW Cumnock group has been keeping the community busy with its Summer programme which hosted activities for more than 600 townsfolk.
New Cumnock Development Trust (NCDT) provided activities over four weeks and helped to boost the confidence and skills of those from nursery age to those in their 60s.
The SummeRRR programme – the three R’s standing for Restore, Revive, Reconnect which is the trust’s aim within the community following Covid – included walks with NC Strollers, which was open to all; Afton Active Minds Football for men; a three-day children’s football camp; and a Couch to 5k event for NC Road Runners.
A particular highlight was a four week Feel Good Programme for Women, which included nutrition guidance, HIIT classes in the park, yoga, aqua aerobics in the outdoor pool, and ended with a celebration night in the Bowling Green with a TFI Fashion pop-up shop and makeup demo with buffet.
Laura Pagan, ICF sport, activity and well-being officer at NCDT, told the Chronicle: “Even with restrictions in place, we managed to have an amazing Summer. Almost everything we did was outdoors, and we certainly made the most of the sunshine.
“During the four weeks, we spent time with all age groups and provided the opportunity for people to simply feel better within themselves and enjoy time with each other.
“Many of the Summer activities have continued to run every week due to the dedication of volunteers within the community.
“Without their help, many of the groups would have ended. With the support of the Development Trust, not only will they continue, but they are growing.”
For those who didn’t want to walk as far as the walking group, a Summer stroll was arranged and for families who wanted to get in on the action, an ‘old skool’ family games night and barbecue was held. Attendees had a fantastic time playing outdoor prize bingo, rounders, tug of war and the sack race.
Buggy Boost offered fitness classes for parents and carers with little ones in buggies and for a catch up afterwards, Brew n Blether provided a cup of tea and a chat for whoever needed it.
Children in the area were spoiled for choice, too, with activities for nursery tots as well as those of school age.
To mark the end of an unforgettable summer, a trip to Millport took place, where residents walked 11 miles around the whole island.
Laura added: “We aim to create an active, healthy community where people can both share skills and learn new skills. This is only the beginning.”
NCDT will be sharing a full Winter Programme via Facebook within the next few weeks.
