Health and wellbeing experts at Dumfries House are set to host a conference on chronic pain.
The Chronic Pain Conference will take place on the estate on October 1 and 2 and aims to expand the picture of understanding and managing chronic pain alongside conventional treatments.
Through The Chiu Health and Wellness Programmes, The Prince’s Foundation has a strong track record in success dealing with a host of issues, including chronic pain management through programmes for local people.
Janice Tannock, 64, who is originally from Catrine but now lives in Cumnock, said: “I had lived with pain for years but being on the course at Dumfries House was almost as if a weight had been lifted.
“It helps your perception of the pain and you can come to terms with it. I did a lot of meditation and found that helped, so I became interested in the course when I found out it emphasised the benefit of complementary therapies.
“I had been unable to find work and, through the JobCentre, via a couple of people, I had learned about the Dumfries House course. I found that, when you’re in among people who do understand, that, in itself, makes you feel better.”
She continued: “I manage my pain more effectively now and have come to terms with it better. I learned that, by being aware of the cause of the pain, I accept it better. I try to pace myself, doing a little bit of cleaning then stopping and picking up a book. I used to feel guilty about reading while not getting all the cleaning done, and now I don’t. It’s like a meditation for me — if I’m in the book, I’m not aware of the pain.”
Carolyn Paton, health and wellbeing co-ordinator at Dumfries House, said: “On Day one, we are fortunate to have experts from around the UK who work with those suffering from chronic pain in a more holistic way, alongside our local NHS experts who are delivering exciting new approaches locally.
“On Day two, we are looking to let participants experience a host of different workshops to give them a taster of what is available.”
