A 70-year-old woman has had her long, flowing hair completely shaved off in aid of a cancer charity very close to her heart, helping to raise £600 for those in need of assistance.

Last week, we reported on how Grace Nichol, board member of Netherthird Community Centre, was braving the hairdressing scissors in tribute to her sister, Pearl, who is currently battling blood cancer.

On Friday, July 23 with the help of Elaine who did the honours and tens of friends and family members who cheered her on from the sidelines, Grace took the plunge and doubled her initial target of £300 which will go towards Macmillan Cancer Support.

Speaking of the hair-raising moment she said goodbye to her locks, Grace said: “When I go to bed at night, the last thing I do is undo my hair but I’ve got no hair left to do that now!

“It went fine. The hair will grow back in again. I went to the shop for milk and showed the girl who works there. She said, it suits you, but I have to say it’s not a hair style that I’ll be keeping.

“The community really came out to support me. The cancer charity got the money and I got a free hair cut so I was happy with that.

“My ex brother in law also made an appearance. He lost his sister and brother this year to cancer, and I had my family and friends there, too.”

Following the haircut, Grace said she checked in with her sister, who lives in Kent, to fill her in on how it all went.

She continued: “I phoned her that night to tell her. I haven’t got a mobile phone so I asked someone to video it and to send it down to her. My sister donated herself, too.

“I’d like to thank everyone who donated money in honour of the Macmillan nurses.

“It was so good of everyone to do it.

“It’s hard now because a lot of charities have been struggling financially in the last year.

“They were hit hard by Covid and weren’t getting the money in. I’m hoping things get a bit better for them soon.”

Cumnock Chronicle:

You can still drop by the centre to donate.

Well done, Grace, from everyone at the Cumnock Chronicle.
