The devastating moment that a fire ripped through the Dark Sky Observatory near Dalmellington has been captured on camera.
People in East Ayrshire and beyond have been left deeply saddened after yesterday's scenes which saw the popular observatory burned to the ground in what cops have deemed 'suspicious' circumstances. They are asking anyone with information to come forward.
The fire took hold in the early hours of Wednesday morning [June 23]. Fire crews attended but the damage caused by the blaze was, in the end, 'extremely significant'.
A resident who happened to spot the flames ravaging the wooden structure from his home said he was "gutted" about the incident. He explained: "It really did attract people from all over the world to the local area. A major loss to the local area.
"I just hope the board can find the resources to rebuild better and stronger than before."
Elena Whitham, MSP for Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley, also extended her sympathies, saying: "Thank you to Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service who attended the incident and are, I understand, investigating the cause of the fire.
"I will be speaking with colleagues later today to seek more information and see what needs to be done to save this wonderful asset for the Doon Valley and wider South West Scotland."
Sharon Dowey, MSP for South Scotland, said: "It’s devastating to hear about the fire that has broken out at the Dark Skies Observatory. Thankfully there have been no casualties and I’d like to praise the fire crews for their swift and capable response and for their continued efforts to combat the fire.
"The Dark Skies Observatory is a fantastic resource for Ayrshire and South Scotland so it’s concerning that police are treating this fire as suspicious. If anyone has information about the blaze, please confirm forward and let the authorities know."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland through 101, quoting incident number 0293 of Wednesday, 23 June. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
