SCIENTISTS have found an “increasingly clear” link between a new potential coronavirus symptom and positive cases, according to reports.

Experts at the British Association of Dermatologists believe skin rashes should be added to the official list of COVID symptoms to help the UK curb the spread of the disease.

Currently only a fever, change to the sense of taste or smell and a new, continues cough are recognised as key symptoms within public health messaging.

However, the World Health Organisation has had a “rash on skin, or discolouration of fingers or toes” on its list of symptoms for months.

Dr Tanya Bleiker, president of the British Association of Dermatologists, told The Times: “The association between certain rashes and Covid-19 has become increasingly clear, and being able to recognise these is crucial for reducing the spread of the disease.”

Tim Spector, professor of genetic epidemiology at King’s College, said: “We have asked the [UK] Government to add a new skin rash to the official NHS list of signs and symptoms of Covid-19, as it will reduce infections and save lives.”

The Times also reports that data from the King’s College London research found that 9% of people testing positive for the virus also experienced a skin rash.

They say the new rash was a slightly better predictor of a positive swab test than a fever or cough.
