AN INSPIRING schoolboy is launching his own charity after struggling with type 1 diabetes.
Lochlan Murdoch is battling the illness and wants to raise awareness of the condition for others to ‘get rid of the stigma’.
The impressive 11-year-old now plans on setting up Lochlan’s Legacy which will educate families, friends, teachers, and football coaches about diabetes and the differences between type 1 and type 2.
His mum Lesley Murdoch is beaming with pride now her son is so eager to help others.
After he was diagnosed at just four and a half years old she was left struggling to understand his condition meant and how to help him right away.
Lesley wishes there had been an organisation that could have helped as she had to ‘learn fast’ to help her son, and now wants to share her expertise with others.
She said: “It’s beyond important. It is about the inclusion of people and peace of mind for children.
“The charity is raising awareness of type 1 diabetes in Scotland.
“If someone, especially a child, doesn’t feel like people know about their condition they can’t have the same level of trust with them.
“That is why we are working with the SFA to get football coaches trained and aware.
“We want to get rid of the stigma as a lot of people mix up type 1 and 2 diabetes.
“They tell Lochlan ‘you don’t look diabetic, did you eat too many sweets as a kid’ which can be infuriating at times.
“It is also important we reach siblings and teaching staff and really people beyond just parents.
“It can be a scary illness if you are faced with it and don’t know what you are doing.”
We told you how last year struggled with his own mental health after losing all his confidence due to a football injury.
He broke his leg, putting him on the sidelines, and was unable to join in with school friends at football which left him feeling really isolated and lonely.
Lochlan suffered a huge shift in his personality and had a breakdown as he confessed to his parents how he had been struggling with his mental health.
But his mum Lesley Murdoch, 38, said she ‘got her son back’ after the nine-year-old finally opened up about how bad he had been feeling.
He decided to do walk around all the major football stadiums in Scotland to raise awareness for mental health and type 1 diabetes.
After it’s huge success pulling in more than £10,000, Lochlan has no plans to slow down soon.
Now he will complete a second stadium marathon to promote his soon to be charity and their efforts to spread awareness.
