GUTTED Cumnock rugby ace Mark Bennett admits he can't stomach his glory world cup try for Scotland.
The former Cumnock RFC player scored what seemed to be a sensational match winning try for Scotland in the dying minutes of Sunday's gut wrenching Rugby World Cup quarter final defeat against Australia at Twickenham.
But just as the nation was about to toast Bennett as the memorable match winner, the Wallabies struck a painful blow in the heart of Scottish rugby fans with a controversial match winning penalty in the final seconds to seal a one point victory and a spot in the semi final.
Match referee, Craig Joubert decided not to review TV footage that could have saw the Aussies awarded a scrum rather than the penalty that was the final nail in the Scots coffin.
Former Cumnock RFC Bennett's lightning fast reactions saw him intercept a loose pass as he streaked away to score beneath the posts and send the Twickenham crowd wild with just seven minutes remaining in the game.
Speaking to the Chronicle this week, the gutted Glasgow Warriors centre said: "When I scored I really thought that was it. I thought we had won the game from there and a few of the other players said the same to me. Everybody seemed to have us written off heading in to the game but we really took the game to Australia and pushed them all the way. The players were just distraught after the game."
Speaking of the controversial decision to award the Aussies the match winning penalty sickened Bennett admits he hasn't been able to stomach watching the match back. He said: "I haven't seen it so I couldn't comment on it. It's still a sore point. I can't watch it."
Now Bennett has to refocus as Scotland prepare for their Six Nations campaign in February.
