A GROUP of fed up residents in Dalmellington are urging the council to take action to stop drivers speeding down their street.

Residents in Townhead have filed a petition with Ayrshire Roads Alliance to take action to stop motors flying down the tiny street.

Townhead is a twenty zone and part of the street has no foot path, meaning pedestrians have no choice but to walk on the road and a group of people who there have had enough of speeding motorists flying down the quiet street.

They are asking the council to either introduce speed bumps to force traffic to slow down or to pedestrianise the street.

Marc Whalen is the man behind the petition and he is reckons it is only a matter of time until someone gets hurt unless the council act now.

He said: "The worst offenders are young ones in wee motors.

"There's no pavement and people have no option but to walk on the road. There's no reason why the council can't put bollards down at the end of the road and close it off or speed bumps or any other traffic calming measure."

Stewart Turner, Head of Roads at Ayrshire Roads Alliance said: “The Alliance received a petition last year and have investigated the concerns raised.

“Following site visits, improvements to signing and road markings were undertaken to emphasise the mandatory 20mph speed limit in force in Townhead.

“A speed survey was also conducted and showed very good compliance with the 20mph speed limit.

“The Alliance’s road safety budget is limited and resources are prioritised in favour of locations where there is a recorded speeding or accident problem, and at the current time no further interventions are proposed for Townhead.”

Father-of-three, Marc reckons that local youngsters are at risk unless traffic slows down.

He added: "There are weans going to get killed on this street unless something is done. The weans think of the street as just being the front of their house because its so narrow and there's no pavement on some of it.

"The limit is twenty, and even that is probably too fast. The council have got to come out here and stand in my street and I'll do 20, 15 or even 10 miles an hour by them and they can tell me what the right speed should be."
